A Tankerman’s role is critical to our nation’s petroleum and chemical shipping industry. The special skills and abilities of a tankerman are also critical in protecting America’s waterways by ensuring there are no mishaps during transfer operations. Under U.S. Coast Guard regulations, tankermen serve as the person-in-charge (PIC) of the vessel for cargo transfer operations involving tank barges. Transfers involve all types of liquids, including oils and refined products, chemicals, and liquified gases.

Upon successful completion and graduation from LTA, participants are eligible to receive a Merchant Mariner’s Credential (MMC) issued by the USCG, which will qualify them as a licensed tankerman.

Upon successful completion and graduation of the LTA training program, the graduate will be eligible to continue employment with Loadstar. A student’s eligibility for continued employment by Loadstar is based on his/her overall performance while in training, level of competency at the time of graduation, and Loadstar’s staffing needs.

While industry experience is always a plus, potential students are not required to have any industry experience to qualify for the Loadstar Tankerman Academy. When selecting students, Loadstar looks for individuals who exhibit the traits needed to be a successful and premier tankerman.
